“R-Accordi in Teatro” – An International Call for Ideas to Renovate and Enhance the Teatro Comunale, the Municipal Theatre of Bologna.
Renovating and enhancing the Municipal Theatre of Bologna, “uniting” together with the urban context around it: this is the challenge taken up by the Comune di Bolona, the Municipality of Bologna, in cooperation with Fondazione Teatro Comunale, Fondazione per l’Innovazione Urbana, Fondazione Rusconi and the Bologna Association of Architects, through the International Call for Ideas “R-Accordi in Teatro” (“tUNIting” in the theatre), addressed to designers of all the world and open until September 16, 2019, which implies and investment of 3.000.000 Euros in total.
The aim of the contest is to find the best creative project for the renovation of the Teatro Comunale building which runs along Via del Guasto. On one side, the renovation works shall lead to a TUNING, i.e. improve the theatre activities, by meeting some of its specific needs and by adding new functions, in order to improve accessibility, especially for people with limited mobility, as well as to enlarge the parts destined to the theatre staff and stage services. On the other side, they will necessarily redesign the inside and outside spaces of the building, to UNITE, i.e. create a new connection with the existing physical and social context around the theatre, especially of the streets via del Guasto and Largo Respighi, and of the whole university area. The total value of the call is 3 million Euros, of which 2,4 for the works and the rest for the design project.
The winners will be projects that best appear to have drawn inspiration from an idea of contemporary Theatre, with a view of wider openness towards the city, more respect of the safeguard and conservation needs of the building, creating a positive impact on the environment in terms of sustainability, and basically contributing to improve the liveability of the university area.
There will be three prizes for three winning project: number one shall receive 12.000 Euros, number two 10.000 Euros and number three 8.000 Euros. The City of Bologna might later entrust the winner of the contest with the preparation of the technical and economic feasibility project, the final design and working plan, and the coordination of the safety measures in the design phase.
The call is financed under the Pact for Metropolitan Bologna (Patto per Bologna Metropolitana) – Development and Cohesion Fund 2014-2020, and is open until September 16, 2019. The contest is held entirely online, via the existing platform in the website of the Bologna Association of Architects.
