Shenzhen (China), the City of Design among the UNESCO Creative Cities, has launched the SZ DAY 2013 – Shenzhen Design Award for Young Talents international competition, with the title “Recovery: The Power of Design”. The award is specifically addressed to young designers coming from the UNESCO Creative Cities network.
The competition aims to promote design solutions that will contribute in a creative and functional way to the recovery of the local and global economy, always keeping in consideration a range of different issues, such as environmental sustainability, social and economic development and the improvement of the quality of lives in cities.
The architecture and design firms that will participate for Bologna, the UNESCO Creative City of Music, have been pinpointed by the collaboration between Dipartimento Economia e Promozione della città of Comune di Bologna and the Incredibol! project. Each Creative City that means to enter the competition has to present 5 candidates, an individual or a team, with age or average age of or under 35 years, and will include a student session reserved to registered students in colleges or other educational institution.
The competitors from Bologna are Apparati Effimeri, Miroarchitetti, Fabiana Ielacqua, Davide Pretto and Francesco Zironi, and Gian Piero Giovannini, the only student provided by the contest regulations. The award goal is evidently to reach young and creative professionals who will become promoters with their projects of the cooperation between the UNESCO Creative Cities as well as between different working environments, and will contribute to value the role of architecture and design in the recovery of the economies.
The candidates and their works are being examined by an international jury, in which the name of Ugo Camerino, an Italian architect, stands out. The Italian judge graduated in architecture from IUAV University of Venice where he subsequently took up a professorship for Architectural Composition. His professional activity has encompassed, both in Italy and abroad, the fields of architecture, urban planning and restoration projects.
There will be specific criteria following which the jury will examine the creativity and uniqueness, the union of technology and practical user consumption, but also the coherence and pertinence to the main theme of the competition, which is the “power of design”. The awarding ceremony will take place in December in Shenzhen.
Bologna, by deciding to enter the competition, takes a big opportunity for its creative sector and its young talents, who now can take further steps on the international market and confront themselves with new and different working environments.
