Hamamatsu is a Japanese city located in the southern part of the island.
Because of its dynamic cultural landscape, the City was recognized as Creative City of Music by UNESCO in december 2014.
For Hamamatsu, both culture and music are priorities in social development: urban transofrmations during the years highlight this concept.
Indeed there are four key-themes linked to music to encourage the growth: musical and cultural projects, devoted to increase international relevance of the city; preservation of traditional music, to defense identity and typical culture; many musical organizations active in the city, that create jobs and healthiness; and programmes for education and talent development.
These elements make great Hamamatsu’s reputation as a centre of international arts and creativity.
Many music events take place every three years in this city such as “Hamamatsu international piano competition” or “Shizuoka international opera competition”, both having global relevance. Since 1991 the “Hamamatsu world youth music festival” has taken place, an event focusing on youth music group and on all music-lovers.
Moreover every October a citizen-made festival named “Yaramaika music festival” takes place in Hamamatsu, gathering professionals and amateurs from all over the world. Furthermore, since 1992 the “Hamamatsu jazz week” has been organized, dedicated to jazz lovers that can enjoy events like “Street Jazz Festival”, the “Jazz concert for parents and children” and the “Yamaha Jazz Festival”.
Such a rich offer of events and festival in the city is made possible by the vitality that the citizenship and government experience in order to make music a key-concept in the right way to live the city.
Thanks to various facilities, events can be organized very easy: “Hamamatsu ACT Art City Academy of Music”, “Kamoe art center” and the “Hamamatsu Museum of Musical instruments” just to name a few.
With the purpose of make Hamamatsu “a creative city built on civil collaboration”, cultural exchange programmes with other cities in the network are always encouraged: next one will be during the Sound Design Festival in December 2017 and Bologna will be represented by the collective Antonello Ghezzi.
