The 36th edition of the Bologna Festival, from the 19 March 2017 features the best orchestras and conductors from around the world. In a strengthened format of the festival – Great Performers, Talents, The New Old– a cycle of three “Portrait of the Artist” concerts will be inserted for the third year, this time dedicated to the pianist Alexander Lonquich
Grandi Interpreti (Great Performers)
The opening concert of the 36th Bologna Festival, Sunday 19 March at the Teatro Manzoni, has at centre stage the greate Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich with the Ensemble ReEncuentros, a group of musicians from various backgrounds. Also noteworthy among the session’s piano recitals is that of Arcadi Volodos, the beguiling representative of classical-romantic piano music, who on the 9th May will play music by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms.
The “Talenti” festival, taking place from the 28 March, puts forward young musicians and winners of prestigious competitions, alongside new musical discoveries such as the pianist Amadeus Wiesensee, or the clarinet and piao duo Rattle-Özsuca, who will debut in Bologna as part of the collaboration between Bologna and Liverpool, both UNESCO Cities of Music. As in previous years, the “Audience Prize” will be awarded to the best performer of the festival. The winner will be awarded with a concert to take place next autumn.
Il Nuovo e l’Antico (The New and the Old)
The Il Nuovo e l’Antico is particularly intellectually challenging and is dedicated to the 450th anniversary of the birth of Monteverdi and, in the 10th year after his death, to Karlheinz Stockhausen. The homage to the German composer will take the form of an intense week of concerts and interviews on the theme “Melody and strucutre in the late Stockhausen”.
The 10th edition of Baby Bofè, aimed at children aged between 3 and 11, will continue until May 2017. The idea of a festival of classical music dedicated to children was born out of the wish to offer children the opportunity to get closer to the langauge of music, with the intention to create a space and a time appropriate for their abilities for attention and understanding. This year the festival includes a performance of Rossini’s Cenerentola. Download the Baby Bofè Programme
