Bogotá, capital city of Colombia with almost 8 millions inhabitans, was recognized as UNESCO City of Music in 2012.
This title is the result of deep urban, cultural and social transformations that the city has been knowing in recent years, in which music has been an essential part of. Administrations, government and associations have understood that economic and social development has to start from cultural richness and they tried to involve the citizens in this processes. In this way, many events and festivals were born: not only for entertainment but also to lead the city to grow obtaining both national and international relevance.
Since 1995, the city has hosted Festivales al parque, a series of shows and concerts taking place in its parks. Different kinds of music are main themes of every festival: people from over the world come to enjoy and performe Rock al parque, Jazz al parque, Hip hop al parque, Salsa al parque, Colombia al parque and Ópera al parque. Also the Festival Estereo Picnic, since its first edition in 2010, has gathered lots of participants from international rock and pop scene.
In 2013 the city created a program for providing musical education in public schools, covering more than 30.000 children and young students.
For these reasons, the city continues to propose initiatives concerned with music and social development like Pulsation: Music in cities, a meeting oriented to analyze policy making associated with strenghtening music’s relevance.
