The Australian TV network ABC, in 2014, broadcast “Heart and Soul”, a documentary about the Soul Band named Sweethearts. The 13 episode documentary describes the troubles that the band’s very young members had to face, while preparing their trip to the Porretta Soul Festival in 2012. School obligations, a very dense rehearsal schedule, sudden health problems and line-up changes did put the school girls of Geelong, a large city close to Melbourne, and their dream to take part in the best soul music festival in Europe, to the hard test. The documentary has recently received a Nomination for the Emmy Awards, the highest award for TV programs which is only to be compared to the Grammy Award for Music and the Tony Award for theater.
The Sweethearts play the innovative music genre known as “nu-soul”, are the present and future of soul music in Australia. They are all girls and their repertoire is a mix of original pieces and re-defined classic sounds. Although they’re still students attending high school, they only perform in professional settings and write their own pieces. The band already recorded several CDs and is currently followed, at rehearsal and shows, by a film crew for the second series of ‘Heart and Soul’, commissioned by the ABC.
